summer songs and other random thoughts

i've been away from blogging for awhile. mostly cause i think of stuff to post but then am too lazy to sit down and type it out. not that i've been up to anything pressing or important. i'm happy to report that according to my latest mri my stress fracture is officially healed. yay!!!!!

it seems like every summer there is one song that sticks out and i listen to over and over and over. i am a bit obsessive about songs sometimes, and once i find one i like i listen to it virtually on repeat. my college roommates can vouch for this, since for a long time anyone who rode in my car was subjected to repeated listenings of bye bye by jo dee messina. sorry guys!

two summers ago it was a black eyed peas song called let's get retarded. it was an amazing song before the black eyed peas sold out (even more) by changing the lyrics and licensing it to the nba. their first two albums were fantastic, and i get a little wistful whenever i hear that weird quasi remake of the lisa lisa song, thinking of the days when bep were good.

anyway, the song of this summer is these words by natasha bedingford. it is repetitive and slightly (ok, hugely) cheesy, but that's never stopped me before. it's produced a bit like a britney spears song. i can't vouch for the lyrics, but i'm a SUCKER for a good hook. i've been taking breaks to listen to the latest new pornographers album, which so far i love.

as for books, my rec of the summer (fiction) is the big over easy by jasper fforde. i also just read the two middle books in his series that started with jane eyre, and i highly recommend him for anyone who is well read and enjoys a well-plotted mystery/comedy. the big over easy is his first in a "nursery crime" series, and the main character is jack spratt, investigating the murder of humpty dumpty. it is hilarious!

also hilarious, and recently discovered, is wonderfalls. it was a tv show a few years ago that was highly lauded by the critics. i watched a couple episodes when it came out and wasn't too impressed, but caught some eps on logo the other day and loved it! logo is this new gay/lesbian channel that i randomly discovered one day. so far i've seen concerts by indigo girls, erasure and kylie minogue, and an old movie called edge of seventeen that starred one of my clients from when i worked at a talent agency.

getting back to wonderfalls, it was creative and original, and basically everything that current, lame ass network sitcoms are not. i quickly netflixed it and just finished watching all the eps and commentaries. really made me wish the network had kept it around. at least there's another season of arrested development (lone, trailblazing exception to above comment about lame ass comedies). must also give a shout out to entourage, which had an amazing second season. one of my fave lines came in penultimate episode of the season when ari yelled at the parking garage attendent about how many pesos he gave him for xmas and the guy responded something along the lines of "oh, and mr. gold. i'm from guatemala and our currency is the quetzel."

yes, so clearly i've been keeping quite busy while americans are stranded and destitute in new orleans. these recent quotes by barbara bush have me fuming. and now we'll have chief justice john roberts. makes me scared that they'll vote him in, and only then will bush announce his pick to take o'connor's spot, possibly someone extreme like janice rogers brown. This site points out she is often a lone dissenter and outside the judicial mainstream. of course, as every obit and article on rehnquist has pointed out, he was in the same position for awhile and eventually moved into the majority (for the most part). and since she is on the ca supreme court, i'm guessing she might not seem so extreme on the us sc. so frightening!

ok, guess i'm just making up for lost blogging time. to close i'll quote mike sexton, "may all your cards be live and all your pots monsters." or something like that.

back to another blogging hiatus.
