how do you say pathetic in german?
luckily i don't need to know how to say it, i can just point to the us's performance against czech republic. i am not entirely sure that publishing this will work, because blogger is appearing in german, and as my subject indicates i am not a german speaker. furthermore, german keyboards are annoying in that they switch up the y and z keys, so i am forever backtracking.
but enough about that. we had about five minutes of hope before our defense completely broke down and gave up a goal. honestly, i think there are high school teams out there who might have put forth a better effort. we looked so, so scared, and couldn't seem to even attempt to take players on one v. one. my seatmate, jeff, said it best when he noted that a big part of the problem is that half our players are coming out of mls. when you're as good as landon donovan, the only way you're going to get even better is to play against better players. he is doing himself (and consequently the national team) a huge disservice by continuing to play in mls. i'm all for improving our league, but i also would like to see us not completely embarrassed in the world cup. look at convey -- guy goes to play in england and he's the only player on the field who even tries to take on a czech player one v. one.
i've never seen our defense look worse, either. the only small amount of solace i have is that had reyna scored with that shot off the post the game might have ended differently. we just needed some confidence and it seemed to dwindle further and further as the game wore on. i only hope we can bounce back against italy (doubtful) and not repeat our 1998 performance.
i'm finding the fans in germany, at least the americans, to be less enthusiastic than in korea, though it might have something to do with our shitty game. overall, though, it seemed like korea attracted the true diehards, whereas germany is filled with americans that simply have the time and money to come over here.
i've been avoiding tourist areas, though, and have met loads of friendly germans. tonight should be fun, when they take on poland. i hope they win!!!
