i'm back

yeah, it's been too long. the last few months are a bit of a blur, but i've been motivated to get back to blogging by my incessant need to share poker stories and a distinct lack of people with whom to share them. i'm no globe-traveling, 10k buy-in ringer, but i certainly try. mainly i play the weekly no-limit tournament at the holland casino in amsterdam. i played one tournament in ac before i left for a'dam and busted out right on the bubble of the final table, but was pretty thrilled just to make it that far. i finished in the money twice so far in a'dam, once in a limit tournament where i placed third, and once in eighth in a no-limit. a'dam has been great experience for me to play w/ "real" people, since almost all of my playing is online.

i was really disappointed with the eighth place finish, b/c i went into the final table with one of the larger chip stacks. the way the tournament is structured the blinds get very high near the end, so essentially you're all in any time you choose to play a pot. action folded around to me (left of button) early on and i picked up A8 suited. i tried to steal. i figured i probably had the bb beat, and he had to call me with anything b/c he had less than the bb left in his stack. so he calls, and turns over AQ!! no help, and i lose about a 1/3 of my stack. a few hands later i picked up AQ suited in middle position and figured that was it. so i went all in, and the same guy, the bb from earlier, thinks for a long time, and then finally calls me. with A10 suited! had i not made my play earlier w/ A8 i'm fairly sure he would have folded, but in the end he calls, and the flop comes A 10 rag, no flush draw for either of us, and his two pair held up. i've thought a lot about it, and talked to a few friends, and i'm not entirely convinced my A8 was such a terrible play, because most of the time he's not going to pick up a better hand. of course, it is 50/50, and it would be much better to make that play with a pair. as for the hand that knocked me out, it was just crappy luck that he caught two pair against my better A, and really I would want him to call me in that situation (A10 v. AQ).

i've had some trouble writing regularly on here (obviously) but i'm pretty excited to share my poker experiences, small-time though they may be.

playing in an aussie satellite tomorrow on eurobet, would certainly love to win a trip to australia!!
