friday night lights

working and drinking over the past two days have meant not as much poker. i played in a few sit n gos, coming in third for all of them. on pokerroom i almost always come in first or second, but for some reason on full tilt i can't place higher than third! except on nye, where i played a 90 person and might have had first place locked up if i hadn't had to leave early to get some dinner with friends. i ended up fourth, which was fine considering how fun my nye was.

i had some crazy hands over the last few days, but all my notes are at home, and i just don't have the memory for hands the way some kids do.

what i did find time to do over the last week was marathon friday night lights. i heard great things about the book, good things about the movie, and had planned on getting through both before the tv show, but after a friend emailed about how good the tv show is i had to watch. beware some minor spoilers below.

wow. it's very different from the more recent "trends" in television -- not a procedural, not a mystery/we're stranded (a la heroes, lost, and jericho, which i also recently marathoned and will address some other time), just a great, energetic look at a texas football town and the trials and tribulations of the team members and locals.

you knew within five minutes how jason street's career was going to go, but fnl manages to tell his story in a really fresh way, and address a subject that doesn't get much tv time in a heart-wrenching, realistic (as far as i know) way. perhaps the producers saw joan of arcadia, and realized the potential of including a character in a wheelchair. the relationships between all the characters, while approaching soap opera level incestuousness, somehow work. me, i'm a fan of tyra, the bad girl with some heart who doesn't buy into the whole football hoopla (or does she). more please.

connie britton is seriously awesome as the coach's wife. she's got a great presence, and i remember back on 24 thinking i wish we'd see more of her. who wouldn't want her character as your guidance counselor? also blown away by kevin rankin, who reminds me a lot of mark zupan from murderball. wondering if he was an inspiration for the character. probably.

so...check it out people. check it out.
