follow up

so the question of the day yesterday was raising and calling range from bb/button six handed. i confused stack sizes, and mclarich posted the hand in the previous post's comments. i can't send the hh over from my mac right now due to internet problems (i actually disconnected when we were three handed and had to switch over to my desktop) but insert AhQs for my hand.

unlike the QJ hand i wasn't considering how much money was in the pot, but whether i wanted to call for all my chips w/ AQ. i obviously wasn't pot committed, and my only moves were jam or fold. some players could squeeze with anything, and as it turns out he had a small edge w/ his being suited. i thought b/c my raise was on the button he could have been widening my range, and therefore squeezing lighter than if the raise had come from earlier position. in the end i folded, and decided six handed to wait for a better spot to go all in for my tournament life.

thanks to everyone for comments on the QJ hand, both on the previous post and over email.

i played a little early last night and went fairly deep in two tournaments, but toward the end got short and couldn't double up when i needed to. in one hand i got all in w/ AA v. QJo (who called a raise and a re-raise pre) on the flop (J high), only to see another J hit the river. frustrating, but it's poker. i donked out of riverchasers when i overplayed AT, the best hand i'd seen since i started playing. by that point i really didn't feel like playing anyway, and was fine turning on lost and watching an episode of the wire (only on the 4th ep of the 5th season -- i'm savoring it!).

i'm not going to post deets in case people haven't seen last night's ep of lost yet, but omg, i think it may be one of my all time favorite episodes. we finally got some insight into the island and its powers, and i love, love, LOVE how the producers decided to play it out. imo, knowing that there are only two more seasons makes lost a much more powerful show, b/c everything airing this season and next is with a set end goal in mind. no wondering at the end a season whether it's going to be renewed, and no aimless drifting on and on waiting for people to stop watching. after a sophomore slump and a pretty bad first half to season 3, lost is hitting its stride, and i'd be surprised if it lets up before the end of the series. even last week's minor blip is forgiven!

i lied (plus a question of the day!)

about playing the mookie, that is. bayne gchatted me and told me it was a ko, and i couldn't resist. it didn't hurt that i was able to have two drinks w/ a friend and some of her other friends and make an easy exit in time to make it home for the second level. i'm gonna try to recap, though my memory may be bad on a couple hands. if i had more time i'd go back and look at the hh, but i gotta get to work on time after oversleeping tues and stupid train signal problems yesterday. fwiw, mookie, if you're listening and/or care, i definitely did not like the ko format. with higher buy ins i'm a big fan, but those $2 kos just seem so insignificant, and i'd prefer that all the money go into the prize pool. just my two cents. i am pro double stack, even as an east coaster who would prefer to go to bed earlier, b/c it allows people (i.e. me) to be a little late and not be too punished for it.

things started abysmally. i got really short stacked early when scottmc limped utg. i checked my bb of Q9 and the flop came Q rag rag. i checked, he bet out half pot, and while i considered raising a) there was still a chance he'd limped AA/KK and b) i didn't want to make the pot huge. the turn came a J, he bet out 2/3 pot, i called, and same with the river. i nearly puked when i saw that his JJ had made a set on the turn. i was down to about 1200 chips, and can't totally remember how i doubled/almost tripled up, but i did. also, i got KK twice (i think), QQ about four times, and AA once (no action, sigh) all at my first table, and barely got paid off for any of them.

i nearly lost all my chips on a weird hand w/ someone whose name is escaping me right now. there was a raise pre flop, and i'm pretty sure i called behind another caller w/ 33. the flop came something like 552, and the raiser overjammed the pot. there was about 1400 in it, and his jam was for 2300. i didn't think he had a 5, and thought the bet screamed two overs. if you have an overpair, why jam, why not try to get more value. it's possible he was playing "me" and thought i'd call w/ a worse hand, which is what happened, so if that's the case well played, but i have to think that's going to be a -ev play over time. to any normal sized bet i probably fold there, but donky mcdonk over here decided to call w/ 33. he flipped over QQ, and a gorgeous 3 on the turn gave me the pot.

the next hand i really remember is when i had built up a stack of about 9k. this came courtesy of a flip i won w/ tripjax, where i had QQ v. his AK and held up. it folded around to me in the sb, and i jammed the bb who had less than 2k left (less than 10 bbs at this point, i believe) w/ A5. he woke up w/ TT (wtf!) but i won the pot when two fives fell on the flop.

memory hazy, but i know i made a fair number of lay downs w/ big cards. the first was, i believe to waffles, and i'm pretty sure i had him beat, but it was for my tournament life and i didn't want to flip for it, or even watch him suck out with one of his undercards. then lucko went all in for the 195 he had left (blinds 250/500) and i made my standard raise from the button. the small blind jammed for about 12k more. my AJ was a pretty easy fold at this point, mostly b/c i figured why would he do that light when i'm going to see his hand anyway. i was pretty disgusted when he showed QJ (nice raise, sir) and the flop came J high, with an A on the river. that part is rot, cause flop would be different if i was in the hand, but obv if i can see his cards i'm instacalling there.

from then on i remember little except for KQ in MANY MANY show down hands, and winning 1 flip, then losing the next three. i watched waffles take a sick beat when he made his nut flush on the river but the card made his opponent a full house.

QOD: you're on the button at a six handed final table, and action folds around to you. you make a standard raise (blinds are 600/1200, you raise to 3300). the small blind flat calls, and the bb squeezes and raises to about 16k, leaving himself 17k behind. the question is, if you're the bb, what range are you doing with this? and, if you're the button, what range are you jamming over his raise with?

we finally got three handed w/ myself, donkette, and mclarich. i'm pretty sure i was the short stack to start. i think this is where i won a flip w/ 66 v. mclarich's KQ. at one point i had over 100k, and each of the others down to about 30k, but couldn't close it out. it didn't help that i was beyond card dead at the final table, and any time i did pick up a hand they both folded. i jammed from the bb w/ 77 and watched donkette call w/ KQ to win a race. i believe it was not long after that where donkette called w/ A8 when i had AK and she was down to 17k. the next hand i was priced in to call from the bb and her KT held up over my J2 (both of us had suited spades) coincidentally, i'm remembering now an utg jam where i felt i was priced in from the bb (barely) w/ 63. i came thisclose to folding, but finally made the call, and hit a 3 on the river against what i think was QJ.

next donkette went all in w/ 33, and i called w/ Q6. then i lost w/ KQ to her A5. then came a hand that people on buddydankradio disagreed with. i know he just won 11k, but i just don't see how this is a bad call. i raised on the button w/ QJs (what else am i going to do here three handed, especially after seeing 93o for half the hands). mclarich jams from the sb and donkette (who had double mclarich's stack) folds. i was getting over 2-1 on a call (26k more into a pot of 60k), and was figuring i had two live cards, and was potentially flipping. i was wrong, b/c he turned over KQ and crushed me, but once i'm priced in there, i just don't see folding and assuming he has me beat. hoy said he also didn't like my jam earlier w/ 77 (when donkette was nowhere near priced in w/ her KQ that held up), and maybe i should listen since he's been crushing mtts, but i really think a fold there w/ QJs wrong. anyway, i finally i jammed w/ 33 and mclarich called w/ A6s. he turned the flush and i was out.

very good game to everyone, but especially to mclarich and donkette. also shout out to syndrome187 who played what i think was his first blogger event and held a huge stack through most of it. i can't remember the hand he went out on (though i do remember the time he sucked out w/ 66 v. QQ) and i will link to his blog as soon as he updates it since his last post was from august. :-)

continuing the trend

i need to learn to fold more. i just made a boneheaded play to go out of the 50/50 -- button has raised my bb about four times now, so w/ KTo i three bet him. he calls, and i check raise him all in on a flop where i hit middle pair. unfortunately he hit top pair w/ his KJ (had me crushed pre) and i go out shortly before the money, when i was top third in chips. i played really good, solid poker the whole time, and one mistake wiped it all away. i have to remember not to take it personally when someone continually raises my blinds, and realize that i can wait until i pick up a real hand and try to trap. KT is not the hand i want to be taking a stand with. i also have to remember that middle pair is not gold, and i should not be risking all my chips with it. i'm really frustrated right now, which you might be able to glean from my tone, but i have to keep my concentration and see the long term. the 50/50 has a great structure, and i had plenty of time to wait for better hands. sigh.

no mookie for me tomorrow night, i'm pokered out.

from ul to pb

pb = playing badly

i played terribly last night in the wall street poker tournaments. the first one i had a nice stack on the bubble and threw it away 4 betting w/ A2. i raised pre, and got basically min raised by pp. this should have been a clue that he was strong, and A2 is one of those hands where you can raise, but when you get repopped, you just have to lay it down. i got stubborn and ran into TT. i doubled up when i had K3 against A3 and sucked out a K on the river, but eventually went out when my AT couldn't overpower 88. i should have folded A2 quickly, and waited until a shorter stack busted, or at least until i had a better hand. sigh.

second hand i raised utg w/ AQo, which at an 11 handed table should have been an easy fold. i got two callers, and cbet on a K high flop. i ended up doubling the guy next to me who had QQ. just a horribly played hand. i went out quickly thereafter when my 77 went up against AQ and an A flopped. i didn't even want to play the second tournament, but in order to qualify for the end of season freeroll you have to play a certain number of tournaments, and i've fallen behind in recent weeks due to never being able to make it on the nights of the scheduled tournaments. since i was there anyway i figured why not.

check out al's blog for all the info on the latest bbt. i am surprised there wasn't more time b/w two and three, but w/ wsop seats being the prizes, it couldn't wait too much longer. i didn't really understand why bbtwo was opened up to everyone, since it doesn't seem to be much of a battle of the blogger tournaments if non-bloggers can sign up whenever they want, but my guess is ftp doesn't want to limit it? i'm curious to see if there is any blogging requirement for this one.

basically bbthree means no social life on weeknights for the foreseeable future. i like that the math and mookie don't start until 10pm, so i will occasionally have time for dinner or drinks before. essentially every weekend between now and the end of april is accounted for, so i won't even have a lot of my weekends free to see friends. obv i don't have to play in every event, but no reason not to maximize my shot at winning a wsop seat! i'm just bummed we didn't get leaderboard prizes for bbtwo!

en fuego

no, not me, hoyazo. see his blog post today for a fantastic recap of his 50/50 win last night for just under 11k.

one thing his post illustrates to perfection is what is needed to win a big mtt. you obviously have to play well, and as he always says, steals and resteals must be a part of your game to gather chips when blinds/antes go up late. but in order to go deep in a tournament your good hands have to hold, you have to win some flips, and occasionally you have to suck out. obviously playing well is the glue that holds it all together, but timing and the rng have their fair share of responsibility.

for example, i played the 750k last night and built up a nice stack early taking advantage of some terrible players at my table when i had fairly mediocre hands but hit the flop and/or outplayed them. then around hour 3 i ran QQ into AA on a cooler that there was just no way i was going to get away from. because of my big stack, i still had 4k and close to 20 bbs, and after a few steals i saw KK in my bb. utg raised, utg +2 re-raised, and i jammed. utg was essentially committed since he was short and called, as did utg +2. JsTs for utg, QQ for utg +2 and to my dismay the flop came w/ two spades, and the turn completed utg's flush. i had the K of spades but the river wasn't kind and i was below 10 bbs. i stayed afloat for an orbit or two but eventually went out when i jammed over two limpers from the co or button w/ AT and utg had limped AA. there is an argument that i should have figured one of the limpers had a monster, and waited to open jam, but i made a decision that ended my tournament and given my low M i'm not too upset with my play there. regardless, if i win the KK hand i'm back to 11k in chips and i have the freedom to pick and choose my spots and play my game.

hoy made a double or go home move a few hours into the tournament w/ 88 and ran into 99, and sucked out an 8. it happens, and that 99 guy probably felt a lot like i did the other day when i had two overpairs get sucked out on by underpairs. but it's poker, shit happens, and some days you're going to get unlucky, and som edays you're going to get lucky.

to be clear, i am not saying hoy got lucky to win the 50/50 b/c i think skill, and especially the ability to lay down hands (as his post highlights) play a big role. but there is luck involved, and if you can't accept that, you shouldn't be playing poker. i still have results oriented (ROT) thoughts sometimes, but over the past few months or so i've come to accept that the right play is not always the winning play, in large part b/c of the luck factor.

i'm still sick so i doubt i'll play the math tonight, however i'm playing live at wall street and if i come home wired i may make the in the moment decision to play.

i saw vantage point this weekend, and while it requires a stretch of the imagination to some degree, it's a decent blockbuster, and a fairly entertaining couple of hours. i also saw wicked, the broadway show, and while i enjoyed it and recommend, there is a part of me that cannot get over that i never saw it when idina menzel (superb, unbelievable actress/singer) and kristen chenowith (probably most annoying speaking voice i've ever heard, but part was made for her) were in it.

you have a worse hand?

if so, you're gold against me! monday night i lost at the final table of a ko w/ 88 v. 77, and then a few hands later w/ 77 v. 55. the first one was with the second biggest stack at the table (i was the chip leader by a huge margin) and if i win that i have close to 160k with the next stack having 15k. grrrrrrrrrrr.

last night i went out of the 24k around 100 something with KK v. 99. i also lost with KK to 88 on the bubble of a satellite, which crippled me, and on the next hand the same player raised my bb, i jammed with 99, and his K2s flushed me on the river. sigh.

when you only play a few tournaments a night, as i do, you are going to have bad beats and get coolered, and there's nothing you can do about it. i try to two or three table, in part to increase my odds of making it deep in at least one tournament. doesn't mean it's not frustrating when twice in five hands a worse pp sucks out on you, but it's just ul. i think about all the times i've sucked out with the worse hand, and remember that what goes around eventually comes around, even if it doesn't always seem that way.

i'm sick (sore throat, congestion, blech) but may play the mookie anyway. probably a game time decision depending on how tired i feel.

return to blogging

1) don't believe your landlord when told a leak is fixed. for the fourth time. you will still get home from vacation to a disgusting, water stained wall and a wet mattress. then get told by landlord that you are the one acting irrationally when you question why a plumber has not been called to do the work, and instead the building contractor, who hasn't even seen the damage or pipes, is calling the shots.

2) ireland is fun! they certainly live it up over there. i went to a birthday party for a 90 year old woman that started at 10pm, and the guest of honor finally left around 3am. wtf? my dad, almost a third younger, can barely stay awake past 8pm.

3) i finished third in the math last night. it was a horribly long three-handed match, and i finally went out when i checked top pair on the flop and astin hit his two-outer on the turn (natch).

4) i played poker once while i was on vacation in amsterdam (shout out holland casino!). it was my highest limit ever (5/5 nl). i bought in short for 250 and finished the night up over one thousand euros. i think i played about twenty hands total in 3-4 hours. i'm so tight. i tripled up and then some w/ KK against AJ, QQ, and some guy who didn't show his hand. i made a re-raise against a big stack w/ JJ and an oesd on flop and got KK to lay down (well, he said he laid it down) and i hit straight on turn. the other guy who was all in didn't show. then i got called down on all three streets when i had KQ and top pair by K7 and scooped a 600 euro pot. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

5) i lost my second round hu match. subzero won the first one quickly when we got all in pre w/ 99 v. KK. i won the second one when i turned the nut flush and he rivered a straight. third one was epic, and he had me to the ropes early when my AK was no match for his AA all in pre (dfjkladjgaslk;f). i then had the lead for a good part of it, came back numerous times from the almost dead, but couldn't put it away.

6) going back to work after a long vacation sucks.

7) zack, stop calling me, you're on vacation for chrissakes.

blogging/poker hiatus

no poker for me tonight (go rutgers!) and wed will be my last night of poker for awhile. i'm going to play in ftops 1, and will probably play a few other tournaments at the same time, but i leave thursday for a much needed vacation, and i think i need some time away from poker to get my head straight.

i'm really frustrated with all the bubbling i've been doing, and while i've had some successes at the same time, i have not been playing my best poker. i still have so much to learn and sometimes i find it overwhelming. every time i improve one aspect of my game, some other flaw is highlighted. i've said it before, but i need to make more time for videos and studying, and not let myself play just b/c i make it home in time for x tourney.

i hope that ten days or so away from poker will clear my head and give me some perspective. i already qualified for the ftops main event, so i'll be playing the sunday i return, and by that time i'm sure i'll be ready to play again.

math blow up

i went from chip leader to out in 6th in two hands. slow played QQ into tripjax's 88s, let him hit a straight and couldn't fold to his river bet. next hand i jammed his utg raise w/ AQ and he had KK. second math in two weeks i bubbled. :-(

lost decent stacks in the 24k and 25k, one making an ill timed move into QQ, the other making a great call and getting outflopped. bubbled another 90 person ko. wooooooot!

on the bright side i moved up to the next round of huc6 -- first time i outflopped lucko, the second time i sucked out.

goooooo giants

un - freaking- believable! i had a blast watching the game w/ my die hard giants fan friends, and still can't really believe that eli brought the giants to a superbowl title against the undefeated pats. wooooooooooooooooooooooot.

i got home and fired up the $75 ko along with a few $11 90 person kos. i went out 20th in one, and 15th in the other, which was painful. i am getting so close and dominating these things, only to get coolered or retardly beat. in the one where i went out 15th, i jammed a button raiser who had been pretty active from my bb w/ A8s. not the best hand, but i think his range is super wide on the button. he has 5k total, so he's calling 4k more into a pot of about 6k. and he makes the call, w/ QJo. i out flop him w/ an 8, but he turns a J to double through me. i had him covered by about 4k, but ended up having to jam w/ almost atc when blinds and antes continued to go up quickly. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. i know i don't need to make that move there, but that's one of the best way to get chips in these things, and i still can't believe he's calling for his tournament life with no pot odds w/ QJ offsuit.

i tried not to tilt too badly (with some help from lucko) and maintained my stack in the 16.5ko. i was crushed when i lost a race w/ QQ v. AK with about three or four tables left, which dropped me to way below average. i somehow kept myself alive, and finally got a bb w/ 86 to get all his chips in w/ a pair of sixes on the flop against my JJ and doubled up. unfortunately, i was bubble girl ONCE AGAIN. we were five handed and a super aggro player raised from utg. he'd been raising a ton, and when i saw KQ in the sb i figured i was way ahead of his range and jammed. he snap called w/ TT, and while i was bummed to see i was racing, i could not hit and was out in 10th. i had made a really bad call earlier w/ 99 v. KK and was frustrated with myself from that, but i don't think the KQ play was terrible, considering how much he'd been raising. it just hurt to once again barely miss a final table. lately i've been going out 12th, 13th, 15th, etc. like it's going out of style.

i'm going to try and play the math tonight, though i'm pretty tired since last night's tournament went pretty late. i was also excited to play in the huc6 that alan organized, however it is clearly rigged, since in my first ever huc i drew the defending champ. wtf! i watched him win 8 straight hu matches last night, so obv he's due for some losses. :-)

late night poker

after a delicious departure dinner i returned home excited to watch lost. it took a couple hours, but i finally got around to it, and in the meantime i donked it up in a 90 person ko and $4 180 man on stars. i didn't cash in either, though i had a nice stack in the ko for awhile. i also played maybe the world's longest $20 sng (i swear we were five handed for almost an hour) but went out when i got short and jammed utg w/ Q3s.

at the same time i was railing bayne in the 50/50. he was telling me some of his hands, many of which i would have played differently, but i kept my mouth shut and was a supportive railer. when he was out (around 36th) we played a hu match, and i pwned him (obv). that's a joke, i think he is 2876 -4 against me all time.

i finally started lost around 2am, and when it was over i was totally wired. so i entered a new tournament (for me) the turbo hundo. right after it started i saw a $75 satellite to the ftops me, and after writing yesterday that i hadn't played any satellites, i decided to give it a shot. as for the turbo hundo, it's a pretty big luckfest, and i had two hands fairly early on that i just had no idea how to play, and whether my strategy should be different b/c of the nature of the touranment. the first was my first hand at a new table:

my thought was jammer was in ep, but his range is probably pretty wide, b/c the blinds are coming up and he doesn't want to get below 10 bbs. however, there are still four people to act after me...

Uncalled bet of 2,820 returned to MrPointman

i ended up going pretty deep, but fell short about 8 spots from the money. i got lucky fairly early when a guy who picked up AA and got paid off re-raised my raise (w/ AQ) the very next hand, and we got it all in. he had KK, but i flopped two pair and won. i was playing short handed in the ftops sat for most of the hundo bubble, and i think i shoulda jammed a few hands, and also folded one that i played, but by that time i was hu in the ftops sat, and even though second paid about $140 i was really hoping for the win. i finally took it down, right after i went out of the hundo. i imagine i won't be up at 3am willing to stay up till 5am very often, but when i am, i definitely want to give the turbo hundo another shot.

not sure how much i'll play this weekend, but hopefully i'll get at least one tournament in. goooooooooooooooooo giants!!!!!
